OpenWatcom 1.9 RC1 has been released (3/9/2010), and includes an OS/2 installer. This is an open source release of the Watcom C, C++, and Fortran compilers. It now includes wipfc, an open source tool for generating OS/2 help files, intended to replace the buggy IBM tool that is no longer developed. Michal Necasek has an article describing how to set up an older version of Watcom, much of which is still applicable. From VOICE News.


Warpstock Europe 2010 will be held May 14-16, in Trier, Germany. The event team has arranged for lodgings at "The Golden Tulip" next to the conference center; use the WSE2010 booking code to get the reserved rooms and deal. From VOICE News.


The OS2World Bounty System lists several projects that developers can get paid for; the total current value of all bounties exceeds $3700. Users can help by sponsoring money to encourage development on the projects that are of interest to them. Open bounties include an OS/2 native port of Java 6, improving the icon routines in OS/2, ports of VirtualBox, Skype, VLC, and Abiword, and many more. The latest bounty is for a network driver that supports the Intel Wired Gigabit Ethernet (e1000) network interfaces. From VOICE News.


The OSFree project is working on their 0.0.5 milestone, which is a file system API implementation; it is expected to be completed in May, see the roadmap for more details. Developers are welcome on the project; long-term plans include replacements for Presentation Manager, a WarpIn-based installer subsystem, and command line tools. From VOICE News.


eComStation.Ru is collecting information about TV/FM tuners that work with OS/2. From VOICE News.


An unofficial build of Thunderbird version 3.0.3 has been released (3/7/2010); it includes the Lightning calendar extension. Thunderbird is a mail / news client, based on Mozilla code. See my Warpzilla tips page for more information.


Unofficial builds of Firefox 3.5.8 and Seamonkey 2.0.3 have been released (2/19/2010) on netlabs.org FTP. Firefox is a stand-alone browser, based on Mozilla code. SeaMonkey is a continuation of the Mozilla Suite, and now features addon management, HTML 5 audio and video, tabbed mail, and more. See my Warpzilla tips page for more information. From VOICE News.


Warpstock 2010 will be held at the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, August 6th through 8th. There is a call for speakers to present on topics related to OS/2 and eComStation; submit your presentation ideas to presenters(at)warpstock(dot)org. Your proposal should contain a title and one paragraph synopsis of the topic to be presented. A range of registration options from $115 to $435 are available, with a deadline of June 30. The Warpstock 2010 logo can be displayed on other web sites to help publicity. Note that a passport is now required to travel between the USA and Canada. Thanks to Andy Willis for the info.

The presentation DVD for Warpstock Europe 2009 is now available for download. It contains the presentation files, as well as videos from the sessions and a number of pictures taken during the event. It is a mixed-mode DVD that plays in a HiFi DVD player and also operates as a data disk in a PC. From VOICE News.

QT version 4.5.1 has been ported (2/5/2010) to OS/2. This is a cross-platform application and UI framework. Applications that use QT include VirtualBox, SMPlayer, Psi, Scribus, and LyX. You can follow the progress on the roadmap and milestones for the project; future plans include printer support, and updating to Qt 4.6.1. If you would like to contribute to this port, you can buy sponsoring units from Mensys; 100% of the money goes to netlabs.org. The QT4 runtime libraries and plugins are necessary for running programs built with the QT4 library. Included is an XCenter system tray plugin, which extends the functionality of earlier SysTray plugins. Note: the GA version does not appear to be backward-compatible with some older applications, built against the beta versions.

VLC media player version 1.0.5 has been ported (3/14/2010) to OS/2 as a "Technology Preview." This is a highly portable multimedia player and multimedia framework capable of reading most audio and video formats (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac ...) as well as DVDs, Audio CDs VCDs, and various streaming protocols.


A few more Qt4 apps have been ported (3/14/2010) to OS/2 - Simple Image Resizer version 2.0.2 is a tool for resizing images, QXmlEdit version 0.4.7 is a tree-based XML editor, Capitalism version 0.4 allows you to play online Monopoly like games with other players, MP3Diags version 1.0.04 is for managing information in MP3 files, and tradutor version 0.1 is a tool for translating text with Google Translate.


T&V HappyPlayer version 2.20 has been released (3/14/2010). This is a PM application that operates TV cards built on the Brooktree BT848 chip, including some ATI and nVidia cards.


SDLMAME version 0.137 has been ported (3/13/2010) to OS/2. This is an SDL version of the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.


Paul Smedley has ported (3/13/2010) Quassel IRC version 0.6rc1 to OS/2. This is an IRC client that uses the Qt libraries.


The distributed.net client version 2.9106.514 has been released (3/13/2010). There is also a personal proxy, now (2/15/2009) on build 347. This is a distributed computing project where you can contribute some of your computing power towards research, primarily in the encryption field.


NASM version 2.08.01 has been released (3/10/2010). The NASM assembler has support for X86 multimedia extensions, and supports a various number of object formats, including the old .obj format of the Borland compilers.


Paul Smedley has released (3/9/2010) an OS/2 build of ImageMagick version 6.6.0-3. This is a free software suite to create, edit, and compose bitmap images. It can read, convert and write images in a large variety of formats. From VOICE News.


SmartSVN version 6.5.5 has been released (3/9/2010). This is a Java Subversion GUI client, with features like built-in File Compare/Merge, Change Report or Tag and Branch handling, and more. It requires Java 1.4.1 or higher.


SmartGit version 1.0.4 has been released (3/9/2010). This is a Java GUI client for the Git version control system. It requires Java 1.4.1 or higher.


JExpress version 7.6.2 has been released (3/9/2010). This lets you create Java-based multilingual installers and auto-updaters. An easy to use Swing interface lets you design your installers quickly without requiring any programming. It can also select the exact classes your Java app uses, build your directory tree, and produce JAR files.


Paul Smedley has released OS/2 builds of PHP versions 5.2.13 (3/8/2010) and 5.3.0 (7/4/2009); modules supported include bz2, curl, dbase, exif, filepro, gd, gettext, mbstring, mysql, mysqli, openssl, pdo_mysql, pdo_sqlite, pgsql, and sqlite. Paul Smedley has ported (3/8/2010) GNU Binutils version 2.20.1 to OS/2. These are tools for compiling and linking programs, and most notably includes 'ld' (not functional on OS/2 yet), and 'as', the GNU assembler. From VOICE News.


The "widescreen activators" for Intel and ATI chipsets have been updated (3/8/2010) to version 0.86; these hack the VESA BIOS to support some widescreen modes.


Paul Smedley has released (3/7/2010) an OS/2 port of Apache version 2.2.15. Apache is the premiere web server of the Internet.


PHPMyAdmin version 3.3.0 has been released (3/7/2010). This is a set of PHP scripts to administer MySQL over the web.
